How and why Daybreak Labradors began...
My name is Debbie Needham.  My husband Dave and I began Daybreak Labradors in 1996.  For many reasons...their personalities, their size, their looks, their short hair, their drive to retrieve etc...  I bought my first "Lab" from a pet store in 1995.  They advertised lab puppies, I thought that was what I was getting.  I did not.  Bailey was the dog I bought that day, and although we love him in spite of his flaws...he does have many flaws.  He had problems with agression mostly, which is untolerable in a family pet.  I decided at that point that I wanted to be involved with improving the breed of labradors, or at least maintaining it's excellence.  I wanted to produce dogs like the one I thought I was buying that day...good with children, a great family dog, obedient when trained, an all around great dog.
At that point I contacted a breeder named Kim Tyler of Bayview Labradors.  I wanted to learn from someone that had been raising dogs for a while, to make sure I was doing things right to improve this wonderful breed.  So I started off co-owning a dog from Kim.  This first dog was a dog you can see here named Star.  I have learned a lot from Kim along with other breeders I met along the way.
I love being involved to the degree I am now.  My dogs are all a part of my family, but also have a job.  For some this is obedience, hunting, or just behaving well in the confirmation show ring.  I compete in all of these areas.  My yellow girl Rillo even earned an award at the Labrador Nationals in Denver, CO (2004) called "A Dog for all reasons award."  I think I am most proud of that, because that really says what this breed is...a dog for all reasons!  No matter what I am doing with my dogs, I love them all greatly, and feel privilaged to have them in my life.
Now Dave and I are proud parents ourselves.  We have twins, Brittany and Carter, born 3-23-98.  I can say that my children have a better life because of our dogs being part of it.  Brittany has even started showing in "pee wees.  I do not think there is a better breed in the world...at least for me!!
